What to Do in Door County Wisconsin in the Winter

  1. Open Door Bird Sanctuary

I loved Door County, so when I say that Open Door Bird Sanctuary was my favorite experience, you know it has to be good. The Open Door Bird Sanctuary is a non-profit organization that focuses on caring for birds that cannot be released into the wild. Additionally, you can take part in guided hikes through the sanctuary's 34 acres of woods and wetlands.

As an almost entirely volunteer-run organization, the passion and commitment to the care of these birds is evident. I noticed this throughout Door County, but particularly at the Open Door Bird Sanctuary, just how incredibly passionate these folks are about what they do.

There are some public tours, but I highly suggest booking their $60 private tour. It is well-worth the cost

2. Miller Art Museum

I've never really been an art museum person. I've never looked at a piece of art and had a genuinely emotional reaction. The Miller Art Museum changed that.

At the time of my visit, the exhibition was about aging and the struggle it places on caretakers. While the exhibit will likely be rotated out by the time you visit, I know that the curator has the talent and power to create something just as meaningful.

3. Popelka Trenchard Glass Fine Art Gallery & Studio

I've seen a lot of glass-blowing demonstrations in my life, but this husband and wife team are truly a dynamic duo. Jeremey and Stephanie are the owners and operators of Popelka Trenchard Glass Fine Art Gallery & Studio, and they are an absolute to delight to chat with.

They generally offer free demonstrations once a week. While seeing them work together is the highlight, it is absolutely worth browsing through their gallery to see if any of their pieces belong on your shelf at home.

4. Door County Maritime Museum

The Door County Maritime Museum offers a variety of interactive exhibits. From virtually steering ships out of storms to navigating a barge through the local canal, there is something for everyone at this museum. If you are lucky enough to visit on a warm day, check out the tugboat tours they offer.

6. E-Bike to Whitefish Dunes

This was my very first E-bike ride, and Door County Kayak Tours made it a breeze. Our guide, Ashley, was so knowledgeable about the area and shared a lot of interesting history with us. We rode through beautiful backroads to Whitefish Dunes State Park where we were able to explore the beach and hike some of the trails.

The electric bikes made it easy for all skill levels to join in on the fun, and it was a unique way to experience the beautiful scenery of Door County. Plus, we got to see the stunning icicles covering the cliffs!

7. Hike at Peninsula State Park

Peninsula State Park offers breathtaking views of Lake Michigan. The park has over 20 miles of hiking trails, ranging from easy to difficult. If you are up for a challenge, climb up the Eagle Tower, which takes you to an overlook with jaw-dropping views of the lake and surrounding cliffs.

Where to Eat in Door County, Wisconsin

1. Renard’s Artisan Cheese

Renard’s Artisan Cheese Shop & Cafe is a must-visit for cheese lovers. They offer a wide variety of locally made cheeses, as well as sandwiches, soups, and other delicious treats. The cheese curbs were my absolute favorite of the weekend (and I had cheese curds at every meal).

2. Door County Coffee

Attend Coffee College at Door County Coffee! This is more than just a coffee shop, it's an experience. Take a tour of their roasting facility and learn about the process of making coffee, then enjoy a cup (or two) of their delicious blends. This was seriously some of the best coffee I've had in the United States.

3. One Barrel Brewing Co.

One Barrel Brewing Co. has great vibes. Their beer is solid, and they offer pizzas on-site. They have a large outdoor seating area, perfect for enjoying a cold beer on a warm summer day.

Ordering a flight is really fun because they give you a chalk market to write (or draw!) which brews you want to try. A little child-like wonder at the brewery to make your day.

4. White Gull Inn

The fish fry at White Gull Inn was one of the highlights of my weekend. I don't even like fish, but the authentic fish fry experience at this historic inn was unforgettable. Even though I don't really eat fish, dinner was saved by their top-of-the-line cherry pie.

5. Sister Bay Bowl & Supper Club

Did you really visit Wisconsin if you didn't order a Wisconsin Old Fashioned at a traditional supper club? Sister Bay Bowl & Supper Club offers classic supper club fare, plus an old-school bowling alley.

Where to Stay in Door County

The Pembrooke Inn

The Pembrooke Inn is centrally located in Sturgeon Bay, making it a great home base for exploring all that Door County has to offer. This charming bed and breakfast offers cozy rooms and a delicious homemade breakfast each morning. The owner, Carla, is also happy to give recommendations for things to do and see in the area. Carla has managed to create one of the most comfortable, homey, and just plain delightful atmospheres I've ever experienced in a hotel.

Plus, it's just a short walk from a local coffee joint, 5th and Jefferson Coffee House.
